H. Nelson Householder

1940-2026

H. Nelson Householder, affectionately known as Nelson, passed away peacefully at his residence on June 6, 2026, just shy of his 86th birthday. Born on June 21, 1940, in the serene township of Pine Grove-Brush Creek, Nelson lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a love for nature.

Nelson’s early years instilled in him a robust work ethic, which he carried into his professional life. He was employed as a Kiln Fireman at Fredrick J Dando’s Brickyard in Hammondsville, Ohio, until its closing. His dedication to his work was mirrored in his commitment to farming, a passion deeply rooted in his soul. As a full-time dairy farmer and beef cattle raiser, Nelson began his days early, tending to the land and livestock before heading off to the brickyard, and he continued his labor of love upon returning home. He was dedicated and his life was rooted in the land he loved. Long before sunrise and long after sunset, he could be found tending his cattle and working the fields, as farming was not just a livelihood, but a calling. His commitment to the farm was unwavering, and he took pride in caring for the land that had provided for his family. Through every season his strong work ethic and deep connection to his land were evident, leaving behind a legacy as enduring as the fields he cherished.

An avid deer hunter, Nelson took every opportunity to venture into the woods, a tradition he upheld even into his later years, still enjoying the hunt in 2025. His zest for life extended beyond the fields and forests; he had a fondness for convertible cars and cherished the freedom of riding his horses and his Harley motorcycle during his younger days.

Nelson’s spiritual journey began at Pine Grove Methodist Church, where he was baptized and attended faithfully in his youth, earning a pin for never missing a Sunday for 12 consecutive years.

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Harold F. and Hazel Grafton Householder, and his brother, Herbert Householder.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Saling Householder, whom he married on May 16, 2002. He is also survived by his children, Larry (Donna) Miller of Hammondsville, and Fawn (Barry Podwell) Householder, also of Hammondsville. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Candy Miller, Mandy Miller, Chelsea Taylor, and Levi (Lexi Jenkins) Lawrence, as well as 10 great-grandchildren, with number 11 on the way. Nelson also leaves behind his siblings, Howard Householder and Hannah (Oliver) Starcher, his brother-in-law Donnie (Cindy) Harris, and a large extended family, including Roger (Darla Miller) Lawrence, Helen (Frank) Russell, Courtney (Mark) Rogers, Frankie (Ryan Hyde) Russell, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation in Calcutta, Ohio. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 11 a.m., also at the Martin Chapel with Pastor Irv Hoover officiating. Nelson will be laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery, where he will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
