Richard Leroy Markham Sr.

Richard Leroy Markham Sr., 85, of Columbiana, passed away at the Hospice House in Poland, Ohio on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. He was born on Jan. 21, 1941, in Stockton, New York, the son of the late Laverne and Blanche Markham. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Patsy Stoepler.

Richard was a thoroughbred owner and trainer for 55 years, racing in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and West Virginia.

He is survived by his son, Richard (Sherri) Markham Jr. of Newell; grandchildren, Brittany (Joseph) Marek of Spokane, Wash., Brandon Markham of Coraopolis, Pa.; a great- granddaughter, Lily Marek. He is also survived by Rick’s mother, Sharon Markham of New York; his sidekick of 55 years, David Miller; and his special friend Amy Yuricek of Lordstown.

As per Richard’s wishes no services are planned. The Nixon Funeral Home of Newell was entrusted with his arrangements.
