Edward R. “Russ” Slack, 97, of Chester, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025.
Born on March 24, 1928, in Big Otter, West Virginia, Russ was the cherished son of the late Robert E. and Mary E. Hall Slack. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Jackson Slack, whom he married in 1948, and by his brother, Charles Slack.
Russ was a proud graduate of Clay County High School, Class of 1945. He continued his education at Glenville State College, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1949 and later a master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1952. He devoted his life to education, beginning his teaching career at Man High School in 1949. He went on to teach at Clay County High School in 1951, Weir High School in 1952, and Wells High School from 1953 to 1963.
In 1963, Russ entered education administration as the first principal of Oak Glen High School, serving until 1975.
He then served Hancock County as Assistant Superintendent from 1975 to 1979 and Superintendent from 1979 until his retirement in 1989.
Throughout his career, Russ mentored hundreds of students and colleagues and was widely respected as a dedicated and inspiring educator and committed public servant.
Russ was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chester.
He will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, and the many dear friends he made over the years.
A celebration of Russ’s life will be held on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Dan Cesene. Interment will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m. and from 4 to 6 p.m.
