Wilbur Gene Black
1946-2025
Wilbur Gene Black, born on March 3, 1946, in Hammondsville, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on Nov. 16, 2025, in Canton, Ohio.
Wilbur was a dedicated parts manager at Weirton Coal & Concrete, formerly known as Stravaggi, where he worked tirelessly throughout his career. His passion extended beyond his professional life into a multitude of interests. Wilbur had a profound love for growing plants and flowers, nurturing them with the same care he showed to those around him. He was also an enthusiast of bulldozers, NASCAR, and fast cars, embodying a spirit of adventure and excitement. A man of many talents, Wilbur was a moonshiner and a gifted drummer for the Whiskey River Band, where he famously played “Wipe Out” with unparalleled skill.
Wilbur was an active member of the Ruritans and Future Farmers of America, contributing to his community with dedication and pride. His sense of camaraderie and service left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Winifred (Tice) Black; his beloved wife of 58 years, Beverly Black, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1964; his sister, Gloria Bowman; and his brothers, Fred and Curt Black.
Wilbur is survived by his brother, Arvid Dale (Linda) Black; his son, Robert “Bob” Black; his daughter, Geanie (Chris) Plunkett; his grandchildren, Rachel Black, Joshua Jackson, Lacey Sailing, Jerimiah (Tara) Jackson, and Shane Black; and two bonus-grandchildren, George (Caitlyn) Allen and Cory Plunkett. Wilbur also leaves behind a legacy of 21 cherished great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists in Calcutta, where visitation will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Wilbur’s life will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, at noon, also at the Martin Chapel of Care.
Wilbur lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will be cherished forever.
