Carol Jean Excell

1929-2025
WELLSVILLE — Carol Jean Excell,95, a beloved and devoted matriarch, passed away peacefully at the Carriage Inn of Steubenville in Steubenville, OH on July 31, 2025. Born on September 26, 1929, in Chester, WV, the daughter of the late Charles C. Manes and Gaynell (Peddicord) Hull. She was a 1948 graduate of East Liverpool High School. Carol dedicated her life to being a loving homemaker, the steadfast rock of her family.
Carol was the heart of her household, tirelessly caring for her children, running the household, and supporting her cherished husband, Thomas H. Excell. She and Tom were united in marriage on February 18, 1950, and together they built a strong, loving family over their 66 years of marriage until Thomas’s passing in 2016. Her unwavering commitment to her family and Christian faith served as an inspiration to all who knew her.
As a member of Bible Baptist Church in Wellsville, Carol led a strong Christian life, with Christ always at the center of her being. Her faith was a guiding light, providing strength and comfort to her family and friends.
Along with her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death by: her son, Lon Excell; her stepfather, Donald E. Hull, and her brother Charles “Bud” Manes.
She is survived by her children: Dan Excell of Wellsville, Bonny (David) Sell of Wellsville, and Sally (Todd) Brammer of Lisbon. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren: Kami, Thomas, Andrew, Jesse, Joshua, Meghan, Abbey, and Corey and ten great grandchildren: Rorie, Carter, Arayla, Layla, Aslan, Linnea, Aurabella, Alina, Raylan, and Sierra Alice
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 from 11a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists, in Calcutta. The funeral will follow at 12 p.m. with Pastor Peter Bortz officiating. Carol will be laid to rest beside her husband in Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in Carol’s name to Southern Care Hospice at 100 Welday Street, Ste G, Wintersville, OH 43953 or through the “donate” button on Carol’s obituary page at www.carechapel.com. The Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists in Calcutta have been entrusted with her care.
