Roy Lee Rowand, 93, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025. Born on June 12, 1932, Roy lived a long and full life marked by service, kindness, and a deep love for both people and animals.
A proud Navy veteran, Roy retired after 20 years of honorable service to his country. His stories from those years -- always vivid and often hilarious -- were some of his favorite things to share, and they never failed to bring a smile to those around him.
Roy is survived by the love of his life, Karen Petrie. They spent more than 35 wonderful years together. Their bond was unshakable and full of quiet devotion. A sister Donna (Don) Kershner of Missouri, and his loyal four-legged companion, Peanut, who never left his side.
He was Pap-Paw to Kenzie, Mollie, and Mason Petrie and an honorary Pap-Paw to Austin Allen -- roles he embraced with warmth and humor. His memory will be especially cherished by his great-niece Cathy Berringer and his loving neighbors Joe and Shanley Allen, who were like family.
Roy had a special place in his heart for animals and was known for his gentle spirit and deep compassion. His jokes were unforgettable, his stories legendary, and his presence a true comfort to those who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Nixon Funeral Home of Newell where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am Interment will follow at Shadow Lawn Cemetery of Newell and military services will be held by the Chester American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.
