Allan Keith Watson

1942-2024

CALCUTTA -- Allan Keith Watson, 81, of Calcutta, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Calcutta Health Care. Allan was born in Blackwood, Wales on November 5, 1942, the son of the late Alexander and Violet Doreen (Blacker) Watson. Allan grew up in the small village of Coalburn, where his passion for soccer first blossomed, eventually leading him to professional success on the field.

Allan attended Larkhall Academy School. It was there where Allan found his love and talent for sports, especially soccer. After his graduation from Larkhall he furthered his education at Newport College in Wales, where he graduated with honors, showcasing his dedication to education. After graduation, Allan began working as a Metallurgist at Llanwern Steelworks in Newport, Wales. In 1967, Allan moved to the United States and continued his career as a Metallurgist at Crucible Steel in Midland.

During his lifetime, Allan had a successful career in sports. In his early years, he signed a contract in the Scottish Premier League with Falkirk FC for 12 months. In 1967, while working at Crucible Steel, he began playing soccer for the Pittsburgh Phantoms. He played with the Phantoms until the team dissolved. In 1968, he signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys and in 1970 through 1971 he was a kicker for the Pittsburgh Steelers playing in the opening game at Three Rivers Stadium. He later kicked for Chicago Fire (WFL). In addition to playing professional soccer and football he was an avid fan of Rangers FC and had a passion for playing golf.

Allan is survived by: his two sons: Alexander Watson and Scott Watson; stepdaughter, Heidi (John) McIntosh; four grandchildren: Tyler Chevront. Dilan Watson, Caleb Watson, and Mitchell McIntosh; two brothers: Derek (Mima) Watson, and Ian (Pauline) Watson; longtime family friend, Margaret Gill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Allan is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Dysert Watson, whom he married on August 15, 1987. Allan and Becky spent the next 22 years together until her death in 2010. Allan was also preceded by his brother, Alexander Watson.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at the Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists, in Calcutta. The funeral will follow at 7 p.m. with Pastor Mark Blakeley from the First Christian Church in Wellsville officiating.
