EAST LIVERPOOL - Robert T. Skidmore, of East Liverpool, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 28, 2024, at the Calcutta Health Care Center following a brief illness. He was 97.
Born in East Liverpool, Oct. 7, 1926, he was a son of the late Clyde and Janet Robins Skidmore. A resident of this area all his life, he was a member of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1944 where he played on the varsity basketball team. He also attended Bowling Green State University and Youngstown State University. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served as a radio operator on the USS Shenandoah during World War II. Following his service to our country, he worked at the former Crucible Steel Company as a cost accountant until retiring in 1982 after a 30-year career. He was a lifelong member of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
"Skiddy," as he was known to all his friends and relatives, will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He loved to laugh and make others laugh along with him. He loved sports of all kinds and he played in a men's city baseball league. He also enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer which he played throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Bloor Skidmore, whom he married March 25, 1950. He was also preceded by two sisters, Virginia Manypenny and Sue Dorff, and four brothers, John, James, William and Richard Skidmore.
He is survived by his children, a daughter, Janet English of East Liverpool, and a son, Dan Skidmore and his companion, Kim Spreeman, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and his "adopted son" Rich Brookes, as well as a granddaughter, Michelle Skidmore Flanagan and her husband, Zack. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and special friend, Jim Sullivan.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Calcutta Health Care Center for their exceptional care during his stay.
A private funeral service was conducted at the Dawson Funeral Home by Rev. Greg Mead followed by burial in Riverview Cemetery. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
