NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. -- Sondra Lee (Diven) Gilmer, 85, of New Cumberland, W.Va., passed away peacefully surrounded by family January 8, 2024. She was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on May 6, 1938, a daughter of the late Jesse and Mildred (Morton) Diven.
Sondra, known to some as "Sandy," was a 1956 graduate of Midland High School. One of her first jobs was as a nurse aide at East Liverpool City Hospital. Upon starting a family, she became a homemaker. She then returned to work at the Hancock County Senior Center and then W & J Cleaning Service along with Hancock County Schools, from which she retired at age 70.
She enjoyed an active social life. She was a bowler for years in the Weirton Breakfast League and a member of card club with her friends from New Cumberland. She had attended Trinity United Methodist Church in New Cumberland and was a member of the Weirton Chapter 147 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the New Cumberland Young Women's Club, participating in many of their minstrel shows. She was also an OGHS "band mom" for her three children.
She is loved and survived by her children: Robert H. Gilmer (Daren Carlos) of Nevada, Keith A. (Kim) Gilmer of W.Va., and Amy (Anthony) Weaver of Ohio; known as "Grammy Gertz" to her grandchildren Ashley (Ryan) Pugliano, Taylor (Jennifer) Gilmer, and Bethany Gilmer; great-grandchildren Camren, Fiona, Tre, and Ryley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Joyce Camp, and brother Stuart Diven.
Family and friends may call at Nixon Funeral Home in Newell, W.Va. on Friday, January 12, 2024. from 11a.m. until time of funeral service at 1p.m. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery.
