EAST LIVERPOOL -- Donald James "Jim" Czech, born in East Liverpool, Ohio on Jan. 20, 1933, the youngest of seven children born to Waldemar and Elizabeth (Knox) Czech, passed away peacefully at home Monday morning, Jan. 29, 2024.
A 1951 graduate of East Liverpool High School, he then joined the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict, and later attended Kent State University. He decided he wanted to build "big stuff" and entered the field of Civil Engineering.
He met his wife, Nancy Butcher, in 1955 and they married in Georgetown, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 1, 1956. One year and one week later they welcomed son Jim II on Nov. 8, 1957. On Jan. 14, 1963, daughter Jacquie was born.
Jim lived a great life full of family and adventure. He was a veteran, a pilot, and a builder of tunnels, highways, bridges and pipelines. Jim's work can still be admired along the Pennsylvania Turnpike and in the Alaskan tundra. Mostly though, Jim should be remembered as a loving husband and father, and an awesome grandfather who was affectionately known as 2Pa.
Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Nancy, daughter Jacquie and son-in-law David Martin, grandsons Ian Martin and Andrew Martin, and great-granddaughter Rylie Martin. Also, Patricia Reynolds Mook, a niece who was more like a sister, and brother-in-law, Greg Butcher.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved son D. James "Jim" Czech II, his parents, and his six siblings, "Buss" Czech, Evelyn Reynolds, Tom Czech, Dave Czech, Eleanor Barcus and Madeline Laughlin, and their spouses, as well as his family by marriage, Fred and Charlotte Butcher, Bob and Pat Trotter, Connie Butcher, Jackie Umensetter and mother-in-law, Geneva (Doak) Butcher.
Pastor Larry Rose of the Northside Community Church will conduct a memorial service Saturday, Feb. 3, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home.
Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
Burial will be held later at Calcutta Cemetery.
