Tom ‘Too Tall’ Thoman

1948-2023

Tom, "Too Tall' Thoman, 75, died peacefully at 8:45 pm Sunday, March 26th at Allegheny General Hospital. He was born February 11, 1948 in the front seat of the family car on Western Reserve Road in Boardman Township, Ohio. He was the son of Karl and Anne (Gardner) Thoman of Newell.

He received his education from Hancock County Schools. At the age of sixteen he began working full time when his father died unexpectantly. He was employed for eighteen years by Globe Brick Refractories. He then worked as a full-time custodian for Hancock County Schools for several decades until he retired in 2014. He also served the city of Chester as the school crossing guard.

He married Sharon Doolin of Newell, on August 16, 1969, in Chester. Together they raised two daughters, Mary Lynn (1970-1998), and Lisa.

Tom was a member of Newell First Church of the Nazarene where he served faithfully in the transportation ministry. He spent his Saturday mornings visiting families in the community, inviting them to church, and sharing with them the love of Jesus. He facilitated monthly roller-skating parties for the youth and families who attended area churches. He managed the church pantry and was passionate about providing food and money to those in need within the church and surrounding community. He was a man who easily shared the gospel with others, whether by word or deed. Later he attended The First Baptist Church of Chester, where he and Sharon developed many meaningful friendships.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Anne Thoman, and his daughter, Mary Lynn McHenry. He leaves behind his wife Sharon; a daughter, Lisa (John) Cameneti of Youngstown; two brothers, John of Elkton, and Bob of Georgetown, PA.
