Frank was proudly descended from Scot/Irish stock. His ancestors came to the United States in the 18th Century and settled in Appalachia. Frank's wonderful mother, Ruby, instilled in him a love of learning. He was always an honor student.
At East Junior High, his athletic prowess emerged. Under the tutelage of his beloved Coach Cascio, Frank excelled in football and basketball. As Captain and leading scorer of his 9th grade basketball team, he led them to an undefeated, 13 and 0 season. In his sophomore year at East Liverpool High School, Frank lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. By his senior year, he was focused on basketball. He was team Captain and leading scorer. In all, he earned 10 Varsity letters at ELHS. In recognition of his athletic achievements, he was inducted into the ELHS Athletic Hall of Fame.
Frank was a continuous learner. In 1968 he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from Kent State University. He earned an honorary Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina, and he was chosen for a graduate level international program for corporate administrators at Harvard University.
While at Kent, Frank met the love of his life and future bride, Margie Rust, who survives. Frank and Margie went on to raise a wonderful family, comprised of son Andy, deceased, and daughter Katy. Frank was a doting grandfather for Katy's two "Grand Girls".
Frank's sisters, Lou Marie and Mona both earned doctorate degrees and achieved great success in the academic world. The McComas children have made a real difference in the world, all due to the influence of their loving mother, Ruby McComas. After retirement, the siblings, their spouses, and children all moved to north Florida to be together.
After college, Frank entered the business world, where his exceptional talents were quickly recognized. He ultimately served as the Chief Operating Officer of Knight Ridder Newspapers, one of the largest publishing companies in the world. He also owned several businesses with his East Liverpool friends, including chains of Buffalo Wild Wings and Burger King Restaurants, and The Interamics Tile Company.
Through it all, Frank remained humble. He quietly, often anonymously, supported many charitable causes with financial support and volunteer work. He will be remembered fondly by his extended family, his loving friends, and the many people whose lives he touched in a positive way.
