Orpha J. Swain, 97, passed away on Sept. 13, 2022, at home in Doswell, Va.
Born Nov. 16, 1924, in Chester W.Va.. she lived most of her life in New Cumberland then spent the latter years of her life in Doswell, Va.
Orpha graduated from Chester High School in 1942, then continued her education at East Liverpool Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1945. While a student she belonged to the nurse's cadet corp. She worked as a registered nurse for 40 years. She was a lifelong member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Chester, where she played many roles. She was a member of the choir, Sunday school teacher, treasurer and elder. Orpha was also a member of the upper Ohio Valley women's organization.
Orpha Jane married James W. Swain on June 13, 1952. She was known and loved by all that met her.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, James "Jim" Swain; her great-grandson, Andrew James Swain; her parents, Clare and Florence Temple; and brothers Richard and Allen Temple.
She is survived by her son Steven J. Swain and Laura; daughter Nancy A Corker and Garry; five grandchildren, Nicholas Johnson and Erica, Katie Johnson, Amber Swain, Jared Swain and Brooke, and Chad Swain; and four great-grandchildren, Caiden, Navessa, Juniper and Silas.
The family will receive friends at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Chester on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with funeral services following immediately. The Rev. Frank Lewis will officiate. Interment will be held at New Cumberland Cemetery. Services are in the care of the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester.
