Alma M. Lane Kelly

Surrounded by her family, Alma M. Lane Kelly passed away on Aug. 22, 2022, 18 days after her 96th birthday. Daughter of the late Browder R. and Velma M. Hutchison Lane, she was a lifelong resident of East Liverpool.

After graduating as salutatorian of the class of 1944, she attended Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York for one year, after which she was employed by the Patterson Porox Division, the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, and the Lane Foundry Company, a family business.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce A. Kelly, whom she married on Dec. 7, 1946. She is survived by a brother, Clarence E. "Bud" (Roberta) Lane of Bowling Green, Ohio; three sons, David (Karen), Philip (Janice) and Stephen (Shirley); four grandchildren, Melissa (Jason) Leith, Ryan (April) Kelly, Laura (Cody) Reed and Reece (Alethea) Kelly; and five great-grandchildren, Landon, Stevie Victoria and Lane Kelly, and Evelyn and Linus Reed.

After her sons were enrolled in school, she resumed her education at Geneva College from which she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. Her post-graduate work was conducted at Franciscan University, Kent State and Youngstown State, where she earned a Master's Degree in Educational Administration  and was a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar award recipient.

After teaching in the East Liverpool City School System, she was appointed to the position of principal of East Elementary in 1977 which she held until her retirement in 1990. She often expressed her gratitude for her excellent staff members and her loyal secretary/friend Sarah Callen.

In addition to being an avid lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, she also enjoyed attending the performances of the Pittsburgh Symphony, reading and journaling. But, paramount in her life was her faith. A member of the Oakland Free Methodist Church since the 1940s, she served in many capacities of service and, in the words of her favorite hymn, would say: "This my song, through endless ages, Jesus led me all the way."

Immediate arrangements were made by the Martin Chapel of  Care Funeral and Cremation Specialists.

The family is planning for a memorial service to be held at a future date.
