STEUBENVILLE -- Roger Dale Starkey, born August 4, 1950, in East Liverpool, Ohio, passed away surrounded by family on June 30, 2022, at Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville, Ohio, at the age of 71 after an extended, hard-fought battle against cancer. He was the son of the late Francis Lee Starkey and Imogene Virginia Stout Starkey.
Roger was a graduate of East Liverpool High School, class of 1968. He worked for Parts Service in East Liverpool, Ohio, for 25 years as a machinist and was later named store manager. He taught shop at East Liverpool High School for one year and worked for a short time in California as an armed security guard. He also worked at Homer Laughlin China in Newell, West Virginia. His last few years of employment before retirement were spent with Napa Auto Parts in Lisbon, Ohio.
Roger loved playing the lottery, watching Ohio State football, and taking his canine companion, "Shady," for rides in the car. He also enjoyed his weekly football boardgames with his son, Kevin.
He is survived by his daughter, Julie Starkey of Stillwater, Okla., two sons, Kevin Starkey (Nicole) of Washingtonville, Ohio, and Bradley Starkey (Jamie) of East Liverpool, Ohio, and six grandchildren, his brother, Allen Starkey (Cindy) of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and two sisters, Patricia Alves (Keith) of Fresno, Calif., and Alice Camp (Jim) of Los Alamos, Calif.
After being diagnosed with cancer, he lived with his Aunt, Kathleen Russell, until the need to be hospitalized arose six days before his passing. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tracy.
Roger was kind and giving described by many as "the sweetest man." At his request, there will be no funeral service. With a final act of kindness, he has instead donated his body to medical science in hopes that it may help someone in the future. The family asks those who would like to honor Roger's memory to donate to the American Cancer Society.
