Richard J. ‘Dick’ Prince, Sr.

WELLSVILLE — Richard J. “Dick” Prince, Sr., 75, of Wellsville, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021, at East Liverpool City Hospital due to complications from COVID-19.

He was born October 30, 1945, in East Liverpool, the son of the late Howard and Helen (Burns) Prince. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death on July 17, 2002, by his wife and love of his life, Betty C. (Cooke) Prince, whom he married August 9, 1969. He was also preceded in death by one brother, H. George Prince, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Coy and Ferne Cooke of Eubank, KY.

Dick graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1963 and Pikeville College in 1968. He was employed for five years as the band director in Pike County, KY before he began his teaching career with the Wellsville Local School District. Dick was the band director from 1973-1991 and then taught science from 1991 until his retirement in 2006. He enjoyed being outdoors in nature, and he was also an avid line dancer. He was an active member of the Silver Sneakers program at the Calcutta YMCA. He also shared a love of craft beer with his son and sons-in-law and loved to tell everyone about his namesake beer at Birdfish Brewing Co, Dick’s Hardwood Oatmeal Stout. With a sharp sense of humor, he was a known jokester. A pillar of the community, Dick and his wife, Betty, were named Wellsville Legends in 2010. He was a member and Elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served on the unicameral board and sang in the choir. Above all else, Dick enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and large extended family.

Survivors include three daughters: Elizabeth Wright and her husband, Ben, of Wellsville, Sarah Stanley and her husband, Rick, of Wellsville, and Hannah Long and her husband, Brandon, of Wadsworth; one son, Richard J. Prince, Jr. of Leetonia; one sister: Annette Norris and her husband, Dave, of Lisbon; two brothers: David Prince and his wife, Millie, of Winchester, VA, and Phillip Prince and his wife, Dontree, of Thailand. He was also survived by the family of his late wife: Barry Cooke and his wife, Joy, of Eubank, KY; Beverly (Cooke) Hansford and her husband, Larry, of Somerset, KY; Brent Cooke and his wife, Deborah Luecken, of Bahama, NC; and Brian Cooke and his wife, Donna, of Eubank, KY. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Allyson and Lillyan Wright, Ricky and Lora Stanley, and Elijah and Jonah Prince.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the Covenant Presbyterian Church with Pastor Rick Stanley of the church officiating.

Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 405 18th Street in Wellsville.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family requires that those in attendance wear face coverings at all times. While the family greatly appreciates your love and support during this difficult time, they ask that you greet them with kind and loving words instead of a hug or handshake.
