EAST LIVERPOOL -- Joan Ann Mihalich, of East Liverpool, formerly of Ambridge, passed away Friday morning, October 22, 2021, at Franciscan Manor in Beaver Falls. She was 83.
Born in Buffalo, New York, April 27, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Sarach and Jean Melvin Sarach Cress. She lived most of her life in Ambridge until moving tothe East Liverpool area in 2002. A member of the Ambridge Area High School Class of 1956, she then attended the Sewickley Valley Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1960.
A registered nurse, she worked at Sewickley Hospital and the emergency room at Aliquippa Hospital. She was the nurse during the construction phase at the Shippingport Power Plant. She later served as the school nurse at the D.T. Watson Education Center until her retirement in 1999. She often said that working with the staff and children at D.T. Watson was the best and most fulfilling experience of her career.
Joan was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, Ambridge, for over 45 years. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and served on the Altar Committee. In 2002, St. John Lutheran Church, East Liverpool, welcomed her as a member. She served on the Worship Committee, WELCA, the quilting group, and co-chaired the funeral meals committee.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Mihalich. The couple married October 14, 1966. They were married for 52 years. A sister, Jeannette Ratajack of Mt. Lebanon, preceded her in death as well.
Survivors include a daughter, Katherine Mihalich Scanlon and her husband, Patrick, of East Liverpool, and a son, George F. Mihalich and his wife, Alex, of Fairbanks, Alaska. She is also survived by a sister, Caroline Sell and her husband, Ted, of Beaver, and many nieces and nephews.
Rev. Eric Edwards will conduct a funeral service Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home. Friends may visit at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Following the service, family and friends will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
