EAST LIVERPOOL -- Community leader Sidney C. Porter Jr., of East Liverpool, passed away at the Orchards of East Liverpool Monday, August 23, 2021. He was 93.
Born in Newell, West Virginia, on February 15, 1928, he was the son of the late Eleanor S. and Sidney C. Porter, Sr.
A lifetime area resident, Mr. Porter was a graduate of The Peddie School, then went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University.
From 1952 to 1954, Mr. Porter served with the U.S. Army as a 1stLieutenant. He then returned to this area, where he became vice-president and general manager of Globe Refractories Inc. He had also been associated with Combustion Engineering Inc. in the refractories division, where he retired as vice-president of operations in 1985.
For many years, he was involved in virtually all capacities of leadership in the tri-state area, having served as past president of the Chamber of Commerce, the East Liverpool Rotary Club, East Liverpool Camp Fire Girls, Columbiana Camp Fire Girls, Columbiana County Heart Council, the Tri-State Science Fair, and the Columbiana County chapter of the Ohio State Alumni Association. He was also a past president of the East Liverpool Jaycees, where he had been honored with the Patrick J. O'Farrell Service Award and the Distinguished Service Award.
A past chairman of the East Liverpool Area United Way Fund Drive, Mr. Porter held directorships on the following boards: East Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, the East Liverpool Jaycees, the Potters Bank & Trust Company, Globe Refractories Inc., East Liverpool Area YMCA, East Liverpool Area Council of Camp Fire Girls, East Liverpool City Hospital Nursing School, East Liverpool Rotary Club, Trinity United Presbyterian Church, and the Tri-State Science Fair. In addition, he served as the Southern Columbiana County Economic Development Director for East Liverpool and Calcutta Chambers of Commerce, and was also Chairman of GEAR (Government Efficiency & Reform) on the Columbiana County Charter Committee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Phillips Porter, whom he married on October 26, 1952.
Survivors include his two daughters: Janet Kaplan of Evergreen, Colorado, and Cheryl Porter and her husband, Schaun Mobley, of Mukilteo, Washington.
There are two grandsons, Jason Kaplan and Justin Kaplan, both of Evergreen, Colorado, as well as a sister, Mrs. Harriet P. Secrest of Novi, Michigan.
A twin brother, David S. Porter preceded him in death.
Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements will be provided by the Dawson Funeral Home.
