Sherrill Rae Shaw, 77
EAST LIVERPOOL – Sherrill Rae Shaw, artist, 77, passed away at Salem Regional Hospital on Feb. 6, 2015.
Daughter of architect Ray Allen Shaw and choir director Ethelberta Carson Shaw, Sherrill was born in East Liverpool, Ohio on April 14, 1937 and raised in Hancock County West Virginia.
Sherrill’s talent as a painter became apparent at a young age. She studied in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Spain before settling in New York City. Sherrill became a sought after portrait painter, and her work has been exhibited in New York galleries. Sherrill met her first husband, fellow artist, Leonard Leibowitz while living in New York. Together they formed the company Shaw/Leibowitz based in New York City and New Manchester, West Virginia. Shaw/Leibowitz was renowned for intricate metal etchings on knives and elegant metal castings.
Sherrill later married New Yorker William Cullen, a musician and composer. Together they collaborated on experimental films and documentaries including a video chronicling the pottery history of East Liverpool, Ohio and Chester, West Virginia.
After William passed away, Sherrill was lucky enough to meet Merl “Gene” Noling of Minerva, Ohio. Together they made a beautiful home in East Liverpool. Sherrill and Gene enjoyed traveling, home life, and each other.
Sherrill is preceded in death by her sister, Dr. Susan Shaw Gustke and husband, William Cullen.
She is survived by her brother, Robert A. Shaw and nieces and nephews.
Sherrill was a passionate, talented, and caring person who was always looking out for the little guy.
The world is richer for her contributions. She will be missed.
Sherrill is in the care of the Arner Funeral Chapel and no services are planned upon Sherill’s request.
