Leon Daugherty
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Leon Daugherty, of East Liverpool High School, will be participating in the Skills USA extemporaneous speech competition in Columbus, on April 16-17. He earned a gold medal for his first place finish in the event on March 2, at Ashtabula County Technical & Career Center. According to his instructors, Mr. Gerald Bartlett and Mrs. Lisa Cunningham, SkillsUSA is a national youth organization that promotes leadership and personal development. In addition, it helps students discover and grow their career passions. SkillsUSA works to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The nationwide career and technical education student organization annually serves more than 320,000 high school, college and postsecondary students-and their instructors-in technical, skilled, and service occupation instructional programs. The organization emphasizes respect for the dignity of work, ethics, workmanship, scholarship and safety.
Cole Corbin
WELLSVILLE -- The Wellsville Lions Club has selected Cole Corbin as the Student of the Month for February. He is the son of Jay and Mandy Corbin of Wellsville. His academic awards include the following: National Honor Society for 2 years, 3.75 for 4 years. A member of the Top 10. He received Awards of Excellence in Algebra II and Physical Science. He is also a member of College Credit Plus program, attending Kent State's East Liverpool Campus. During his fall semester and spring semester during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school year he was named to the Dean's List.
He is a member of the Robotics Club, Student Council, Helping Hands, Project Youth Leadership, and is a Project "Paws" (Positively Affecting Wellsville Students) Mentor for 8th grade students entering the High School.
He was a 2 year letterman of the Football team where he earned honorable mention for defense. He was a 1 year letterman for Golf, a 4 year letterman for Baseball earning 3 years of honorable mention also winning defensive player of the year for the 2017-18 school year. Cole was a 4 year letterman for Bowling Team, earning 2 years of honorable mention, 1 year second team, and this year he made it to Districts.
He has been involved in his community. He helped with the Lion's Club breakfast with Santa, Trunk-or-Treat, the Turkey Bowl event for the Bowling team, spaghetti dinner for Baseball, Jaxon's Journey, Tag Days, Youth Baseball Concession Stand, and field work. Wellsville Youth Baseball Camp for 5th & 6th Grade. He was also involved with his church, where helped with Church Camp.
After High School, he plans to join the Local 396 and become a Welding Apprentice.
Preston Dawson
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Preston R. Dawson has been named the East Liverpool Junior/Senior High School Merit Award winner for the month of September. An 8th grader, he is the son of Dike and Jennifer Dawson of East Liverpool. He maintains a 4.0 GPA, where he is enrolled in advanced classes, including honors geometry for high school credit. He is very active, a member and captain of the Jr. High Academic Team and participated on the Varsity Academic Team. He is on student council, plays competitive soccer and is a member of the Jr. High Track Team. For two years, he has been the East Liverpool Jr. High Spelling Bee Champion and participated in the Columbiana County Spelling Bee.
He has also volunteered at the Lou Holtz Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame, East Liverpool's annual City Sweep and delivered food to area elderly and shut-ins and has attended the school's Prayer at the Pole event. This spring, Preston has been accepted in the Middle School Med School Program conducted by NEOMED and Cleveland State University for students interested in careers in the medical profession.
