LISBON — A New Waterford man who set fire to a fishing cabin and utility building on Beaver Lake Road, New Waterford last year entered a guilty plea to four felony counts in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court.
John Troyer, 24, Kibler Road, pleaded guilty to a lesser offense of third-degree felony attempted aggravated arson, a fourth-degree felony arson, a lesser offense of third-degree felony burglary and a fifth-degree felony breaking and entering, with sentencing set for May 12.
Troyer had originally been indicted for second-degree felonies of aggravated arson and burglary, along with the arson and breaking and entering charges.
According to an affidavit, the events occurred May 6, 2022 when firefighters fought two fires within the same block, with the fire at the metal fishing cabin identified as intentionally burnt.
During the course of the investigation, a Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office deputy spoke with Troyer who said he set the metal shack on fire by lighting a piece of cardboard and deliberately placing it under backpacks located on a shelf in the cabin so the items within the cabin would catch fire. The arson charge was for the utility building. Troyer had admitted to entering the buildings and in the case of the cabin, kicking the door open.
— A jury trial was reset to May 16, with a status hearing set for May 8, in the case against Spencer Kidder, 69, Maple Avenue,, Wellsville, charged with four counts of first-degree felony rape, two counts of second-degree felony sexual battery and a single count of third-degree felony gross sexual imposition. All the charges stem from one victim, who was 5 years old when the incidents began starting in Jan. 1, 2014 and continuing through Dec. 31, 2020.
— William S. Davis, 34, North Market Street, Lisbon, pleaded guilty to felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and fifth-degree felony assault, with sentencing set for June 5. A charge of aggravated burglary was dismissed. Davis was accused of causing serious physical harm to a man on Nov. 7, 2021 and causing or attempting to cause physical harm to an employee of a local correctional facility on Nov. 11, 2021.
— Joey Bedenbough, 43, Akron, pleaded guilty to aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, with sentencing set for April 17, for possessing methamphetamine on June 19, 2022.
— Keith Harper, 37, Alliance, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, a fifth-degree, with sentencing set for May 8, for possessing cocaine on April 20, 2022.
— Malcolm Gilford, 36, Cleveland, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, a fourth-degree felony, with sentencing set for March 16, for possessing cocaine equal or exceeding 5 grams but less than 25 grams.
— Christopher Gamble, 46, Alliance, pleaded guilty to nonsupport of dependents, a fifth-degree felony, with sentencing set for May 5 for failing to pay child support for a child from May 15, 2020 to May 13, 2022.
— An East Palestine man who fled from police with drugs in his possession in 2022 was sentenced recently to prison for at least five and a half to six years.
Johnathon Weaver, 35, Bye Road, appeared in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court after previously pleading guilty to multiple felonies.
He was sentenced to terms of four to six years for second-degree felonies of aggravated possession of drugs, possession of cocaine and possession of fentanyl-related compound and an additional 18 months for failure to comply with the order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony. He was also sentenced to nine months for receiving stolen property, a fifth-degree felony, to be served at the same time as the other prison terms.
Weaver received credit for 188 days served in the county jail.
He also received mandatory fines totaling $22,500 and a 10-year driver’s license suspension.
Charges for failure to stop after an accident, driving under suspension, resisting arrest and obstructing official business were dismissed. All the charges stem from an incident May 12, 2022 when Weaver fled from police. The drugs involved included methamphetamine, cocaine and a fentanyl-related compound.
Also in Common Pleas Court:
— James Wiebe, 53, North Walnut Street, East Palestine, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison and fined $10,000 after pleading guilty to third-degree felony charges of aggravated trafficking in drugs and aggravated possession of drugs and two counts of aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony. He received credit for four days in jail and was ordered to forfeit $102 for money from a drug case. Wiebe offered to sell methamphetamine in the vicinity of East Palestine Elementary School on Oct. 10, 2021 and possessed methamphetamine on Oct. 11, 2021 and March 24, 2021 when he also possessed hydrocodone.
— John Robert Wolfe Jr., 40, state Route 172, East Rochester, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for two counts of domestic violence, one a third-degree felony and one a misdemeanor. He received credit for 125 days served in the county jail. Wolfe caused harm to a woman during an incident Feb. 20, 2022, with previous convictions for four domestic violence offenses.
— Joah Leffler, 39, Sherwood Road, Wellsville, was sentenced to two years in prison for attempted burglary, a fifth-degree felony, and two counts of domestic violence, one a third-degree felony and one a misdemeanor. He was given credit for 118 days served in jail. Leffler had originally been charged with second-degree felony burglary. Leffler had been accused of slapping a woman and threatening to punch her in the face and throw her body in the river on Sept. 3, 2022 in Wellsville.
— Noah Barrett, 38, Jacksonville, was sentenced to seven months in prison, with credit for five days served in jail, for violating his probation on a fifth-degree felony count of aggravated possession of drugs related to methamphetamine on Aug. 18, 2018.
— Ashley Ross, 36, West Clark Street, East Palestine, was placed on a treatment plan for three years after pleading guilty to aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, with credit for 28 days already served in jail. Ross possessed the drug lisdexamfetamine on April 1, 2021.
— Daniel Canterbury, 33, Steubenville, was placed on a treatment plan for three years after pleading guilty to aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, and a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia charge, with credit for three days served in jail. Canterbury possessed methamphetamine on May 3, 2021.
— Ted Ingledue, 32, Franklin Avenue, Salem, was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated possession of drugs, a third-degree felony, for possessing methamphetamine on March 9, 2022. The prison term was ordered served at the same time as a 24-month sentence issued in May 2022 for another drug charge from 2021.
— John Diggins, 47, Johnstown, Pa., was sentenced to nine months in prison and fined $5,000 for a third-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs and misdemeanors of possessing criminal tools and engaging in prostitution, with credit for three days served in jail. Charges of resisting arrest, possessing drug abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia were dismissed. Diggins arrived in East Palestine on Nov. 6, 2021 after arranging sex for hire with an undercover Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force agent, saying he would bring methamphetamine and $60 or $80 in exchange for sexual activity. When officers attempted to take him into custody, he resisted and was dry stunned with a taser and had in his possession methamphetamine, a cell phone and hypodermic syringes.
— Grant Adams, 22, South Lincoln Avenue, Salem, was ordered to serve 250 days in the county jail, with credit for 168 days served, after his probation was terminated for violations on felony charges of aggravated possession of drugs and trafficking in marijuana and a misdemeanor of drug paraphernalia. The charges involved amphetamine, less than 200 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
— Richard Monigold II, 42, last known address Salineville, was ordered to serve 58 days in jail after his probation for aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, was terminated for violations. He possessed methamphetamine on June 30, 2019.
— Angela Weaver, 35, state Route 45, Lisbon, was placed on probation for three years, concurrent with two other cases, after pleading guilty to illegal conveyance of a drug of abuse onto the grounds of a specified governmental facility, a third-degree felony, and aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony. The charges stemmed from an incident Jan. 5, 2021 involving methamphetamine.
— Matthew McFarland, 38, Warren, was placed on probation for three years, with credit for five days served in jail, for promoting prostitution, a fourth-degree felony, for transporting a woman to Columbiana County on Dec. 14, 2021 to facilitate a sex for hire incident. Charges of promoting prostitution and possessing criminal tools were dismissed.
— Mark Razo, 39, Canfield, was placed on probation for three years after pleading guilty to aggravated possession of drugs, a fifth-degree felony, for possessing methamphetamine on Aug. 24, 2020.
