Highway Patrol

No injuries were reported after a Dodge Ram pickup driven by Jerald Jarman, 23, Martins Ferry, caught fire while northbound on state Route 11 in Fairfield Township at 2:59 p.m. Aug 12. The Columbiana Fire Department extinguished the fire in the engine compartment. A small trail of oil was found northbound on state Route 11 and on the exit ramp to state Route 344.

Jeffrey Spence, 64, Beaver Falls, was cited for improper starting/backing, operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and OVI refusal after the eastbound vehicle he was driving on South Front Street in Middleton Township ran out of gas and he started backing up, with the vehicle going off of the right side of the road and striking a guardrail at 1:58 p.m. Aug. 11. No injury was reported.

Donald Freeman, 74, Omaha, Neb., was cited for improper turn after he said he turned the westbound semi he was driving too short while attempting a right turn from Columbia Street (state Route 344) onto Chestnut Street, going off the right side of the road striking a yield sign and railroad crossing gate at 6:21 p.m. Aug. 8. The truck continued northbound onto Chestnut Street, dragging the railroad crossing gate across the intersecting railroad tracks. Norfolk Southern replaced the damaged gate mechanism and the Leetonia street department replaced the yield sign and had the section of damaged road closed temporarily.

Sheriff's Office

-- Deputies responded at 2:33 a.m. Friday to the Heck Road, Unity area for a suspicious white Ford F-150 with Florida license plates. Deputies checked the area with Springfield Township police, but the vehicle was not found.

-- A possible overdose was reported at 12:41 a.m. Friday in the area of Pritchard Avenue and when deputies arrived, they learned the person had taken off running upon waking. He was found and detained to be checked by KLG, then was cleared and released to family. He had accidentally taken too many pills, but said he was only sleeping. Lisbon police assisted at the scene.

-- A domestic dispute was reported at 6:53 p.m. Aug. 11 on State Line Road, Middleton Township, between a mother and daughter. Both signed a refusal to prosecute.
