Beaver County Sheriff’s Office warns area residents about scam

2 min read

BEAVER, Pa. -- Area residents are being warned of a scam involving the Beaver County Sheriff's Office.

Over the past few days, the Beaver County Sheriff's Office has been notified by numerous callers that an individual had called them and identified himself as Sergeant Howard of the Beaver County Sheriff's Office. The caller then advised that the call was being recorded and that he was following up on a federal court subpoena in which the victim failed to show.

The scammer then tells the victim that they need to report to the courthouse to handle this immediately. They will need to pay a fine or be arrested on the spot. When they have agreed to come to the courthouse, the scammer hangs up. Then calls them back and tells them that they will be tased and thrown on the floor. If they want to pay without coming into the building they can pay in a variety of ways in which the actors will end up with the victim's hard-earned money.

The intention of the scammer is to scare the victim, with one of the aforementioned lies, into paying the amount they have claimed is owed. They are trying to access bank account information, PayPal type account number, gift card numbers or credit card numbers.

Before giving anyone personal information, always call the agency the caller purports to be. As in this case, if the caller claims that we have a warrant for you, call the Beaver County Sheriff's Office at 724-770-4602 or Beaver County Emergency Services at 724-775-0880.
