LISBON -- The passing of two longtime Beaver Local School District employees was recognized by the Board of Education in August.
The lives of Brenda Vujakyla and Rick Seibert were both honored during the meeting for their dedicated service to Beaver Local students.
Vujakyla taught sixth grade in the district for more than 35 years before retiring in 2011.
She passed away on July 26 at the age of 72.
Siebert spent nearly 20 years as a bus driver for the district before his retirement.
He passed away Aug. 6 at the age of 71.
"We are grateful for the years of service Brenda and Rick gave to our students and our school community," District Superintendent Eric Lowe said. "They were both an important part of Beaver Local, and our thoughts are with their families."
Also during the meeting the board welcomed Christine DiDomenico to the district's nursing department.
In yet other matters, Beaver Local High School Principal Aaron Walker shared positive news about the district's summer learning efforts.
He said that four of the five students who participated in the district's Summer Success tutoring and End-of-Course retake program achieved a passing score on their assessment. All five students increased their scores.
Walker also credited Mike McKenzie with planning and organizing the Summer Success program and said the district hopes to continue offering the program in the future.
"We are extremely proud of the work these students put in over the summer," Walker said. "The growth they demonstrated shows the impact that targeted support and additional opportunities can have for students."
The board also celebrated the success of Beaver Local students through the Tri-State Tuition Foundation.
The district shared that of the 22 local students receiving awards through the foundation, 10 were Beaver Local students, receiving a combined $84,000 in scholarships. The largest individual award was $10,000.
Students also experienced significant success through another scholarship opportunity, with 12 students earning awards and seven of those students coming from Beaver Local.
