SALEM -- The Columbiana County Humane Society is asking the public for any information they may have about dogs abandoned on the side of the road in cages.
According to a statement posted to the humane society's Facebook page, the humane society is asking anyone with information about the neglect and abandonment of eight dogs discovered in "filthy crates" along Trinity Church Road near state Route 518 at 11:50 p.m. Friday to contact the organization at 234-575-1400. All calls will be kept confidential.
"If you have any video footage or trail camera images from the area, please contact us, if you know who these dogs belonged to, we urge you to call our humane officers immediately…Any information you can provide will be invaluable in helping us seek justice for these animal," the release states.
According to the statement, the dogs "were underweight and have a host of medical issues," and were located by a passerby who kept the dogs safe overnight. On Saturday, all eight were transported to the humane society for care and medical treatment.
"All of this happened because a group of individuals took the time to stop and help these poor, defenseless animals and get them to the humane society where they could receive the assistance they needed," the release states.
The statement also says that the humane society will be pursuing the case "to the fullest extent of the law."
