LISBON -- The Columbiana County Health District is reminding residents the district will host a free scrap tire collection event from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 3 at the Columbiana County fairgrounds.
The collection guidelines include a limit of 10 tires per person, tires must be off of the rim and only passenger car and light truck tires will be accepted. The fairgrounds is located off of Lee Avenue, Lisbon.
The tire collection is being funded through a $20,000 grant the district was awarded through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Mosquito Control Grant Program, with half the money going to the tire collection and half to provide free larvicide to county residents in the form of Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits.
According to a press release from the health district, the dunks and bits manufactured by Summit Chemical are available free to county residents and can be picked up at the health district, 7360 state Route 45, Lisbon during normal business hours.
The press release described the dunks and bits as "slow-release larvicides that use natural occurring bacteria to control mosquito larvae. The bacteria are consumed by mosquito larvae, killing them before they can develop into adult mosquitoes. These treatments are harmless to other living organisms and can safely be used in areas such as birdbaths and koi ponds when used according to the product label."
The tire collection event is aimed at reducing mosquito breeding sites by getting rid of tires, which can collect rainwater and provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The press release said mosquito-borne diseases are present in Ohio, including West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, La Crosse encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis. Residents can reduce their risk from mosquitoes by eliminating standing water, avoiding outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers arms and legs and using an EPA-registered insect repellant.
The health district board was updated recently about the tire collection event.
In other business, the district received good news from the Ohio Auditor of State with completion of the audit for 2024 and 2025.
"It's great to see the hard work of our team identified by the state with another clean audit," county Health Commissioner Dr. Wesley Vins said, with no problems identified and only a recommendation related to the reclassification of two line item funds noted.
The board issued board orders against Diamondback Porta Potts, care of Frederick Dynamic Holdings LLC, Mark Frederick, East Liverpool, for not registering with the health district as a septage hauler, giving the company and Frederick 30 days to comply or the orders will be sent to the county prosecutor for charges. According to Director of Environmental Health Laura Fauss, as of last week, Frederick had met all the requirements except proof that he took the required state test. He already had the statewide bond, proof of liability insurance and his registration.
The board awarded the contract for the latest Water Pollution Control Loan Fund project to Headley Contracting LLC for $27,458 for a sewer project in Knox Township. Headley was the lone bidder.
Fauss reported the next expanded water supply public education event will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 2 in St. Clair Township at the township hall on how to understand sampling results. She also reported completion of the Ohio Department of Agriculture Survey of the food service program for retail food establishments, saying the employees were complimented by the surveyor.
Health Services Administrator Amanda Amato reported the recent skin cancer screening clinic attracted 41 people, with 25 who were new clients. She also reported there were still no measles cases in Columbiana County, with vaccines available at the health district by appointment.
The flu clinic schedule was announced: 9 to 2 p.m. by appointment on Oct. 23 at the fairgrounds vaccination complex and two walk-in clinics on Oct. 27 requiring no appointment, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Salineville Kiwanis building in Salineville and 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Carlo Acutis Parish at St. Jude Church in Columbiana. More details will be released closer to the flu clinics.
A resolution was approved authorizing a Huntington Bank credit card contract and an internal policy change for the sewage treatment procedures was approved.
The next meeting of the health district board will be 4:30 p.m. Oct. 21.
