Heavy rains flood local communities, closes roads

LISBON -- The rains came down heavy Tuesday morning, leaving scattered power outages, lots of flood waters in hard-hit Hanoverton and other flood-prone spots and some road closures, too.
"Hanoverton got hammered," Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency Director Peggy Clark said.
She was in communication with the Ohio Department of Transportation for most of Tuesday, starting with a call from the county Sheriff's Office about flooding. She's also been talking with the fire departments, especially the Hanover Township Fire Department, which has been dealing with a flooded U.S. Route 30 and state Route 9 and water surrounding some homes, along with flooded basements.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Clark said a small section of state Route 172 was still closed near Lakeview, but was expected to reopen and did reopen. U.S. Route 30 past Kensington, around Lynchburg, was also closed with water still on the road.
According to the map on the ohgo.com, which is the ODOT website for current conditions, roads still closed as of Tuesday afternoon include a section of state Route 9 north of U.S. Route 30 and both eastbound and westbound U.S. Route 30. In the northern part of the Columbiana County and southern Mahoning County, the map showed a closure on state Route 165 and state Route 45 between Western Reserve Road and state Route 165. Old state Route 558 was also closed at some point.
Clark said some of the familiar spots that always flood in the county flooded, but the water had already receded.
Ohio Edison's outage map showed some spots throughout the county still without power.
More storms were expected Tuesday night, with ODOT District 11 reminding residents to watch for water and debris in the roadways and to never take a chance on flooded roads, with the saying, "turn around, don't drown."
