CALCUTTA -- St. Clair Township officials Monday updated the trustees on the sale of vehicles.
Police Chief Brian McKenzie told the trustees that the department had posted a notification on social media for sealed bids for an unmarked car no longer useful to the department and previously authorized for sale.
McKenzie also noted that he had received a check from Alcatraz Body Modifications for approximately $900 for the sale of old firearms that were traded in or sold, and that would go to offset the cost of the new firearms the department has.
McKenzie also said the department is receiving complaints about speeding in the neighborhoods and the department would do the best it can but noted with limited officers, they can't afford to sit in the neighborhoods for an extended period of time, so they will make the rounds and do what they can.
Trustee Robert Swickard said that normally the complaints are about kids speeding, but the complaints they are receiving the most are against the delivery trucks.
McKenzie said normally when the complaints are coming in from residents, it's typically other residents speeding and the department cannot spend an extended time sitting on a two-lane roadway watching. He also noted the department has no issue enforcing the law if it's residents or not.
"We will do the best we can," McKenzie said.
In other business, an executive session was called for personnel matters to discuss, hiring, firing, compensation or other personnel matters. The trustees invited Fiscal Officer Deborah Dawson and McKenzie into the executive session. The trustees returned to an open meeting with no action taken.
Road Foreman Dave Smith's request to purchase six Hercules tires at a cost of $1,000 each for a total of $6,000 from J&J Tire and Alignment for the road grater was approved. The money to pay for the tires is coming from the sale of several older vehicles no longer used by the department.
Ruth Sullivan, organizer with the Veterans Picnic, shared with the trustees that the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department allowed them to use the station for the picnic so they could avoid the heat and the smoke in the air from the Canadian wire fires.
She noted that if the fire department had not helped, the picnic would have been a bust, with many veterans having poor health and not able to withstand the heat or the air quality. There were approximately 520 people in attendance at the picnic, with 277 of them being veterans.
Sullivan thanked the fire department for allowing them to use the station because they had considered canceling the picnic if the fire department had not allowed them to hold it at the station.
There were no reports and no one present from either fire department.
Minutes from the July 13 meeting, payment of purchase orders totaling $21,412.36 and bills totaling $146,494.71 and an amended certificate for the police levy budget to increase appropriations in the amount of $24,153.34 were approved.
The St. Clair Township Board of Trustees meets every other Monday at 4 p.m. at the St. Clair Township Government Building, 15442 Pugh Road. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Aug. 10.
