EAST LIVERPOOL -- The East Liverpool schools superintendent recently provided board members with highlights of summer achievements and an update on back to school preparation.
Superintendent Jonathan Ludwig shared the information with board members during Thursday East Liverpool City Schools Board of Education meeting, starting by welcoming to the district the new staff members who were present.
Ludwig then shared how East Liverpool students continued to excel in athletics, academics, music and innovation over the summer.
He congratulated Arionna Olmdsted-Huffman for her third-place finish at the in the region along with a $300 scholarship at the Ohio Invention Convention and Violet Reed, Kaley Rogers and Chasity Nally for their honorable mention achievement and invitation to Kid Inventor Day at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. He thanked East Liverpool Jr. Sr. High School STEM teacher Jerry Bartlett for his mentorship for the students.
Ludwig also congratulated Dre'Keim Abercrombie, who received 11 Division 1 scholarship offers, for his commitment in the continuation of his academic and athletic career at James Madison University; Paige Cowan who was selected to represent Team Ohio in the Ohio versus Pennsylvania Wrestling All-Star Duals and Kaleb Hanlon and Natalia White for being selected to compete in the 80th Annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game.
Garrett Cooper was congratulated for his attendance at the Ohio State University Drumline Summer Sessions, and the East Liverpool High School Potter Blues Show Choir was recognized for representing the district at East Liverpool's America 250 Celebration/Revolutionary War Memorial Dedication.
Ludwig noted the district continued supporting students outside the classroom through a variety of community partners including The Brightside Project, East Liverpool Carnegie Public Library, The Salvation Army and the East Liverpool Youth Academy along with providing students with summer meal boxes.
The district has again been awarded the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant, which will allow the district to provide all students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade with free fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the coming school year. Ludwig thanked the Food Service Department for making that happen.
Ludwig said that the Buildings and Grounds Department has been busy behind the scenes working to prepare each building for its opening day, with cleaning, painting, floor refinishing, repairs, landscaping, and numerous maintenance projects.
"I truly believe we have one of the finest facilities teams in the Tri-State area, and I thank each of them for their outstanding work," Ludwig said.
He also noted that with the new equipment the district received he believes the team may be almost ahead of schedule on the buildings and grounds.
Ludwig then reminded the board members of upcoming events including Fall Sports Parents Meeting on July 28 at 7 p.m. at the High School Auditorium; Potter Soccer Alumni Day on Aug. 2 at Patterson Field; Blue and White Night on Aug. 13; the Back to School Bash on Aug. 24; Elementary and Kindergarten orientation on Aug. 26; Freshman orientation on Aug. 27; first day of school for first through 12th grade on Aug. 31 and first day of preschool on Sept. 8.
