EAST LIVERPOOL – After a long overseas journey from India, work is progressing on the Revolutionary War Monument to be erected in East Liverpool on the corner of Sixth and Washington streets.

The monument’s foundation has been poured and is ready for the monument to be placed.

The monument, which arrived from India in five pieces, is of India black granite. It is currently at Richardson’s Monuments in Lisbon where work is ongoing to sandblast and laser etch the names of the 157 American Revolutionary War patriots from Columbiana County and emblems representing the war and the America 250 celebration on it.

Carly Brock, owner of Richardson Monuments, previously noted the granite cost $24,000 for which she donated half, and the other half was provided from a donation given to East Liverpool by an anonymous donor for community projects. The monument was carved in India because that is one of only three places in the world where black granite can be sourced.

Once the sandblasting and etching are completed, the 6,500-pound, 10-foot-tall granite obelisk with an American flag carved on the top will be stored at Richardson Monuments until the time comes to set it up in East Liverpool for its unveiling, scheduled to take place during the East Liverpool America 250 Celebration on July 11.

Steve Barlow, project organizer and color guard commander for the Mahoning Valley Sons of the American Revolution, said the memorial will provide residents and visitors a place for reflection, education and remembrance for many years to come.

“This memorial serves not only as a monument to those who fought for American independence, but also as a reminder of the enduring principles of liberty, duty and patriotism that continue to unite our nation,” Barlow said.

Additional information on the monument unveiling and East Liverpool America 250 celebration will be published once all details are finalized.

Starting at $3.75/week.
