Wellsville council looks at cost to bury cremains
WELLSVILLE – Village council is considering added a cost to bury cremains in an occupied grave.
Council members recently agreed to have an ordinance drafted that would charge $350 on top of the grave opening and closing costs to bury cremains in an occupied grave at Springhill Cemetery.
Council member Mike Lombardozzi told council members that currently if someone wants to bury the cremains of a relative in the occupied grave of another relative, they are only charged the fee for opening and closing the grave. He said other cemeteries are charging half the original cost of the burial plot for a second person.
In other business, Village Administrator Jerry Medley said he and village employees have been working on readying the flood wall for the Army Corps of Engineers inspection and would be able to start mowing at the cemetery or the park once done.
Zoning Officer Rick Williams requested a change to permit fees for demolition in the village. He said the cost of the permit is $10. Council approved the drafting of an ordinance to change the permit fee to $10 for the first $5,000 of the demolition cost and $1 for every $1,000 over that.
Council member Cindy Mick said smoke testing leaks would cost $285 per bucket of the non-toxic liquid smoke needed for the testing, and it would require two buckets. If approved, council would need to post a public notice on it. Council gave the approval for the testing.
Additionally, Mick reported the village is planning a Fourth of July parade, planned to go down Main Street to Fifth Street and come up Riverside to the Veterans Park. They are looking for more participants for the parade and anyone who wants to participate is welcome. There will be plaques awarded to parade participants including prizes for first place float, best dressed historical costume and plaques for kids for bikes and hot wheels.
Council President Keith Thorn said there would be further discussion and planning on the parade at the Chamber of Commerce meeting at 6 p.m. June 23 in council chambers and anyone interested is invited to attend.
Council member Aaron Smith said the park board is still in need of one more active member, and the board is actively working to improve the park with a three- to five-year plan.
Wellsville Village Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Wellsville Village Hall, 1200 Main St. The next regular meeting is scheduled for July 7.
