Beaver Local board recognizes bus driver who assisted in dog attack

LISBON — A Beaver Local school bus driver was recognized for her bravery by the Board of Education this month for her actions during an emergency situation she witnessed near Lake Tomahawk in May.

District Superintendent Eric Lowe said that bus driver Amber May’s quick thinking and courage during the emergency was heroic.

“May assisted an individual who was being attacked by dogs, helping the victim reach safety until emergency responders arrived. Members of the district’s transportation department and other community members also assisted at the scene,” Lowe said.

According to previous reports a Beaver Local teacher was walking on Tomahawk Drive on May 15 when she was attacked by two boxer breed mix dogs, suffering bites to her arms, legs and the back of her head as well as having her arm broken.

Lowe said the teacher is doing well in her recovery.

In other matters, Lowe also said during the June board meeting that the district is nearing completion of its staffing process for the 2026-27 school year, with only a few positions left to fill.

He also said that district administrators have already begun preparations for the upcoming school year, including reviewing state report card data as student assessment results become available.

He then turned his attention to summer maintenance projects, noting that the district is entering its 12th year in the current facilities.

“Beaver Local continues to emphasize preventive maintenance and long-term facility care. Planned summer projects include carpet cleaning, parking lot resurfacing, painting, and various building repairs and improvements,” he said.

The district’s new athletic facility is already seeing extensive use, he added, sharing that more than 100 high school athletes have participated in free speed and agility training sessions offered by district coaches.
