Wellsville school board accepts superintendent’s resignation

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville school board Friday night accepted the retirement of school superintendent and named an interim one.

Following an executive session called to discuss the appointment and/or employment of a public employee, board members unanimously accepted the resignation of schools Superintendent David Cappuzzello.

Board members also approved Kyle Exline, athletic director and assistant principal at the Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School, to serve as the interim superintendent effective May 30. Exline will be compensated per his current employment contract with the board.

Board members additionally voted to initiate a search process to fill the superintendent position and authorized board president Gary Althiser to take all necessary and appropriate actions to facilitate and implement the superintendent search process on behalf of the board.

Cappuzzello Wednesday submitted his formal notification that he would be retiring from his position effective July 31.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I have had here, and I am fully committed to ensuring a smooth transition of my responsibilities,” Cappuzzello said in his notice.

Cappuzzello, who was not present at the special board meeting, did not provide a reason for leaving his position other than retiring.

With the approval of his retirement, the board also approved payment for accrued but unused vacation and sick leave, also effective July 31.

The board also approved a transition for Cappuzzello to consultant effective May 30 through July 31.

The Wellsville Board of Education usually meets on the third Monday of each month at 5 p.m. in the media center at Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School, 1 Bengal Blvd. However, the next regular meeting is scheduled for June 29 at 5 p.m.
