CALCUTTA — Southwoods Health, 16678 St. Clair Ave., East Liverpool, has announced expanded services at the Calcutta campus.

The campus now offers primary care, orthopedics, general surgery, pain management, physical therapy and rehabilitation and diagnostic X-ray services.

“Everyone deserves access to quality are close to where they live and work,” Ed Muransky, CEO, Southwoods Health, said through a media release. “At our Calcutta campus, patients can see a specialist, attend physical therapy and visit their primary care provider for wellness visits, sick visits and annual physicals.”

It was also noted in the media release that the services brought together will improve access to care and support preventive health and early detection with a strong focus on quality, compassion, and personalized care.

“Overall Southwoods Health is excited to expand all services including our PT (Physical Therapy) and Rehabilitation line where we can support patients in the area and help them at every stage of their recovery,” Krista Kirkpatrick, director, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Services said.

According to Kirkpatrick, the campus has board certified therapists who focus on high quality making sure they spend individualized time with each patient and tailor those treatments to patient needs and goals.

Kirkpatrick said the benefits of expansion include working closely with Southwoods physicians and specialists to coordinate patient care and provide patient care continuity ensuring patients’ needs are met from start to finish.

PT benefits include pain management, strength and flexibility improvement and getting patients back to where they were before,” Kirkpatrick said. The campus also offers prehabilitation which is care before and after surgery.

Cindy Catheline, marketing, Southwoods Health, said that basically it is about trying to coordinate care so that patients don’t have to travel outside of where they live to get services.

“People will travel for surgery, but they don’t want to travel for PT or to see their primary care physician, so we are trying to coordinate care, so they have hubs right in their neighborhood and they don’t have to travel,” Catheline said.

The Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Service was added to the Calcutta Campus in March 2025 and currently has a physical therapist and a physical therapist assistant.

Kirkpatrick said that some of the other Southwoods Health locations do offer occupational or hand therapy, which means if those services are needed in Calcutta, they can be brought in over time.

Catheline said that if the need is visible in the community they will try to bring in the service to meet that need so people wont have to travel outside of the community for the care needed. She noted that the Calcutta campus does not have everything there yet but if they see the need arise in the area, they will reevaluate the market.

Catheline also said they have space at the Calcutta Campus to allow room to grow and add additional services as needed.

General Surgery is the newest service added to the campus. Those services began being offered at the location approximately six months ago.

“We wanted to provide an expansion of services to have full encompassed services for our patients in the Calcutta area and that’s inclusive of the orthopedic, general services, primary care and pain management,” Kana Rexroad, director of operations, Triad Health Services, said. “We wanted to bring all those services with the intention of our orthopedic, general surgery to provide surgical care if needed.”

Surgery is not done at the Calcutta campus, but at the Southwoods Surgical Hospital in Boardman. A general surgeon will see a patient for consultation at the Calcutta campus to schedule surgery at the hospital.

The Calcutta campus started out with just orthopedic and pain management but then identified that Southwoods Health wanted to provide more services to the community and embrace the more holistic patient experience, recognizing that it goes beyond just specialty,” Rexroad said.

Orthopedic and pain management were the initial services offered then general surgery and primary care followed by physical therapy and home health

The primary care service, which Rexroad said is the primary point of care for the patient, sees them through their initial visit through recovery with a team-based approach and collaboration with the other providers there at the campus. She noted that makes it efficient for the patients and to have everything on sight, is fast and efficient and satisfies patients.

The Calcutta campus can see patients of all ages at the location. While unable to provide the number of patients they currently provide services for at the Calcutta campus, Rexroad said that the higher patient value currently is with orthopedic and pain management, and they are trying to get word out on their primary care services to ramp that up which she said has been a slower.

Cathline said they are trying to establish the importance of everyone having a primary care provider.

Rexroad said primary care services are scheduled appointments or by walk in if someone needs to establish themselves with a primary care provider

On-site X-rays allow for faster diagnosis with a more timely and efficient treatment plan for the patient with the ability to tie physical therapy to help a patient get timely treatment after an injury and home health services allow the campus to expand beyond the office to allow patients to seek care and services they need in their home comfortably, getting the care they need, Rexroad said.

“Expanding services reflects our ongoing commitment to meeting the health care needs of the communities we serve,” Muransky said. “We continually evaluate opportunities to grow based on those needs.”
