EAST LIVERPOOL — Patterson Field was recently transformed into a vibrant hub of literacy, culture, and community connection as preschool students participated in the “Under the Goal Post” Book Club, a unique outdoor learning experience featuring children’s author Gabriel Hamilton.

Held in the Patterson Field Outdoor Classroom, the event welcomed preschoolers from the classrooms of Olivia Brant, Miranda Cunningham and Sydney Dawson for an interactive literary journey centered around Hamilton’s book, “My Trip to Jamaica: The Land We Love.” The story’s themes of family, adventure, and cultural appreciation came to life through hands-on activities and meaningful mentorship.

The event began with a group photo beneath the stadium goal post, followed by a formal introduction from Toys for Tots Student Ambassador Aiden Durst. Hamilton then captivated students with an engaging reading of his book, transporting them to Jamaica through vivid storytelling.

“Experiences like this show our youngest learners that reading is more than just words on a page. It is an adventure,” said Megan Hoffrichter Hernandez, director of communications for East Liverpool City Schools. “By connecting preschoolers with high school mentors and community leaders, we’re creating a powerful, multi-generational literacy experience.”

Following the reading, students rotated through interactive literacy stations led by East Liverpool High School Early Childhood Education students. Activities included sensory exploration, music and movement games, a relay race, and additional story time, all designed to reinforce the book’s themes in fun and engaging ways. High school students also prepared snack stations featuring themed decorations, including globes and international flags, further enhancing the cultural experience.

Students from the ELHS Interactive Media program documented the event through photography and video, capturing special moments and assisting with audio/visual needs.

The event was made possible through a partnership with the Toys for Tots program, and representatives AT Wilson and Deborah Oberlein from Toys For Tots OHIO. The Toys for Tots Foundation supported the initiative and helped coordinate giveaways. Each preschooler received a goodie bag that included books and Toys for Tots items, ensuring the joy of reading continued at home. Students who visited every station were also invited to select prizes from themed “suitcases of goodies.” ELHS students were able to get their books autographed by Hamilton.

Following the event, a special recognition ceremony was held in partnership with Toys for Tots. Wilson presented Toys for Tots USMC Medallion Challenge Coins to Hoffrichter Hernandez, Aiden Durst and Beth Durst in appreciation of their leadership and dedication to supporting literacy initiatives and community service. The coins serve as a symbol of gratitude for individuals who go above and beyond in advancing the mission of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program.

East Liverpool City Schools had a strong level of support with their district leadership including Principal Paul Cusick, along with members of the Board of Education, were in attendance to support the event and celebrate the collaborative effort.

The program highlights the district’s commitment to innovative literacy experiences, student leadership, and community partnerships that enrich learning for all ages.
