Chester council announces cleanup day date
CHESTER — City council will have its annual cleanup day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in the municipal building parking lot, members decided during Monday’s regular meeting.
Mayor Ed Wedgewood said no household trash, TVs, microwaves, light ballasts, computer monitors or tires will be accepted during the event.
Only Chester residents who prove city residents via a current driver’s license will be able to bring items.
Speaking of cleaning up, the city revealed no bids were received for the asbestos removal and remediation of four properties that the city announced it intended on demolishing last month, thus it couldn’t award any contract in April.
Wedgewood said he plans to reach out to potential qualifying bids directly to solicit interest.
Council did proactively approve his advertising for bids for a demolition contractor for 209 Alpine, 166 Montana Ave., 550 Virginia Ave. and 703 6th St. once the absestos situation is handled.
If the city would use funds through its memorandum of understanding with the Hancock County commissioners, the work would need to be completed by July.
In other action, members approved:
— Accepting $103,548.20 worth of March receipts into the General Fund, including in excess of $26,000 each received in racetrack and ad volarem taxes. They also paid $217,252.41 worth of bills, including $88,013.29 to Protech for the new downtown light pole installation.
— Accepting $5,737 in building rental fees during the month of March, paying $2,184 worth of bills, including some heating system upgrades out of the Building Fund.
— Compensation increases for new term elected officials of $300 annually for each council member and $600 for the mayor.
— A $500 donation to the Chester Sons of the American Legion.
— The purchase of new tires for the dump truck from Goebel’s at a cost of $1700.
— Renewal of the West Virginia Municipal League annual dues for $795.
