CC Health District to discuss laws related to food produced at home

LISBON — Lisbon Farmers Market participants and interested residents can learn about cottage food laws related to food produced out of a home during a meeting at 6 p.m. today at Lisbon Village Hall.

Columbiana County Health District Public Information Officer and Director of Environmental Health Laura Fauss said this will be the second year for the presentation of rules and regulations related to home bakeries, small egg production and homemade food items offered for sale related to the farmers market.

The session is hosted by the health district and the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Fauss said last year’s meeting prompted a lot of good questions regarding what can be made and sold without licensing or inspection. One question was about fruit salsa.

She advised the health board about the meeting.

In other business, the board learned about a new service being offered through the Tiffany Breast Care Center for ultrasound screenings through the county health district’s cancer clinic levy. Tiffany Breast Care Center has been doing the mammograms on site for years, now the health district can offer ultrasound screenings on site, such as when dense breast tissue is detected.

Fauss said patients will again be offered navigation services if necessary.

She said the ultrasound screenings are another way to expand cancer clinic services, just like they did last year by adding lung cancer screenings.
