Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department with mutual aid provided by Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire at 49415 Calcutta Smith Ferry Road Monday afternoon.

CVFD responded to the call at 2:10 p.m., and advised the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office to put Liverpool Township Volunteer Fire Department on standby.

When the call reporting the fire was received firefighters were advised all residents were out of the house, but two cats were unaccounted for.

Buckeye Water District was called due to a water line leak and Columbia Gas and AEP were called to disconnect utilities.

Firefighters were advised to use caution when entering the residence because the gas was still on.

According to Fire Chief Dave McCoy, the fire started when flames from a propane weed burner being used by the homeowner entered the house through an outside vent and ignited insulation in the crawl space of an attached mother-in-law suite.

The fire burned a hole in a water line, which McCoy said helped somewhat prevent the fire spreading.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the crawl space preventing any structure damage to the residence.

The fire was extinguished by 2:40 p.m. AEP was called to reconnect the power and Buckeye Water was advised to turn the water off due to the water line leaking. Columbiana Gas was advised at that point the gas could remain on.

Both departments cleared the scene at 3:19 p.m. after advising the homeowner to watch the area for the next 24 hours for any possible reignition and call the fire department if needed.

Starting at $2.99/week.
