West Virginia State Police investigating crash near Mountaineer Race Track

NEW CUMBERLAND — The West Virginia State Police are investigating a crash Thursday night near Mountaineer Race Track, involving a vehicular fleeing a Hancock County Sheriff deputy.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy had attempted to stop the vehicle at 10:20 p.m. after having seen it run off the road just south of New Cumberland.

The vehicle crossed the center line multiple times, and the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle on Ridge Ave in New Cumberland.

The vehicle immediately fled northbound on West Virginia State Route 2 at speeds more than 100 mph. As the pursuit passed Mountaineer Racetrack & Casino, the deputy backed off the pursuit due to quickly approaching the more congested area of Newell.

As the vehicle continued to flee, the driver lost control in a curve just north of Mountaineer Racetrack & Casino, where the vehicle crashed after sideswiping another northbound vehicle.

The driver, the only occupant, climbed from the vehicle and was detained by the deputy until other first responders arrived to assess his injuries. He was flown from the scene to a Pittsburgh hospital.

There was only one occupant on the sideswiped vehicle and he was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.

Although the crash is under investigation by the West Virginia State Police, the sheriff still is continuing the criminal and traffic investigation.

Charges for the fleeing driver, who has yet to be named, are pending.

Chester police and fire, Newell fire, Hancock County EMS, and Nick’s Towing assisted at the scene.

Starting at $2.99/week.
