Beaver Local students, staff participate in literacy week
LISBON — The Beaver Local School District is providing as many opportunities as possible for children to excel in reading and other subjects.
The district announced that students and staff logged 5,624 books or chapters read during the literacy-focused week and 85 elementary school students made the Reading Wall of Fame in March.
The efforts were spotlighted during the March Board of Education meeting in which it was what also reported that the 3GG afterschool tutoring program for third graders has 24 students attending two days per week and fourth grade learning opportunities include before school tutoring and after school enrichment.
It was also announced that Kindergarten registration for the 2026-27 school year opened on March 1.
At the high school, Officer Jasper Cannon was recognized for National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day.
Cannon joined the district as SRO in the fall of 2025. He is also employed with the St. Clair Township Police Department.
District Superintendent Eric Lowe provided other updates during the board meeting, including that the new athletic facility is running well and that adjustments will be made as needed.
He and board members also recognized the achievements of several staff and students who made county honors.
These included Cole Long and Brenna Cunningham, who were named OVAC Swimmers of the Year; Coach Nick Miller was named Columbiana County Co-Coach of the Year; and Owen Hill was named Columbiana County and District Player of the Year.
Lowe also noted that maintenance items are being prepared for the summer and the district is working with Ohio Floors for gym maintenance and resurfacing.
The district is also working with the insurance company regarding the bus that was struck by a vehicle.
The board discussed and voted on various items, including an electricity agreement through the Ohio Schools Council and a field placement agreement with Youngstown State University.
The field placement agreement provides opportunities for college students entering the field of education to gain hours towards certification.
Board President Greg Eisenhart also congratulated elementary teacher Amy Wolski on her recognition as Mahoning Valley Educator of the Year.
