Negotiations ongoing in baseball bat attack case

LISBON — Negotiations remain ongoing in the attempted murder case against Frederick L. Harroff for a baseball bat attack against a woman last year, with another status hearing set for 8:30 a.m. March 19.

Harroff, 66, appeared before Columbiana County Common Pleas Court Judge Scott Washam Friday afternoon in the custody of a deputy sheriff and accompanied by his defense attorney, T. Robert Bricker. The prosecution was represented by county Assistant Prosecutor Alec Beech and county Chief Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Weikart.

Bricker said an offer has been made to resolve the case, but his client has not accepted that offer from the prosecution, with both sides still negotiating. Beech said there’s been no counter offer received.

Bricker asked for a further status hearing to be scheduled before the jury trial, which remains set for March 30. Beech had no objection.

Harroff remains held without bond after stipulating to the prosecution’s request to have his $500,000 cash or surety bond revoked due to violating the terms by contacting the victim with letters from jail.

He was indicted last year for charges of first-degree felony attempted murder, first-degree felony aggravated arson, first-degree felony kidnapping, second-degree felonies of aggravated arson and two counts of felonious assault and fourth-degree felony strangulation.

According to an affidavit filed in county Municipal Court, Harroff allegedly repeatedly attacked the woman with a heavy wooden baseball bat over her head and body while she was laying in bed, causing severe physical harm on June 2, 2025 in Fairfield Township.

One of the aggravated arson charges dealt with him allegedly trying to harm the woman and the other dealt with allegedly trying to harm the property.

In a separate indictment, he’s charged with menacing by stalking and attempted intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case, both fourth-degree felonies, for allegedly engaging in a pattern of conduct causing another to believe he would cause them harm from Sept. 3, 2025 to Dec. 4, 2025. The attempted intimidation stems from an attempt of alleged intimidation on Dec. 4, 2025.

The jury trial in the menacing and intimidation case is set for 9 a.m. July 13, with a final status hearing at 9:40 a.m. July 6, both before Common Pleas Court Judge Megan Bickerton.

Bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety in that case and he was again ordered to have no contact with the victim or any state witnesses.
