Council members vying for seats in new precincts
Some familiar faces find themselves running for new council seats as a result of city precinct changes in December 2025.
All incumbent councilmen except Mike Dotson are seeking re-election; however, first ward’s Nathan Wright and fourth ward’s Jason Thorn are vying for council seats in new precincts.
Wright filed to run for the third ward seat currently occupied by Dotson, while Thorn will be running against ward five incumbent Steve Shuman.
A list of all Chester city candidates was not available as of press time Monday.
Mayor Ed Wedgewood thanked Shuman and his employees for their efforts in the street department, citing the large snowfall and frigid temperatures that made plowing very difficult.
Shuman also recognized the employees’ efforts as well as those of volunteers who assisted with the plowing. He also expressed appreciation for the patience of residents.
Police Chief Chuck Stanley described issues during the storm as relatively uneventful; however, he said that a cruiser was involved in a crash while at an East Liverpool shop for maintenance. The shop employee who had been test driving the vehicle was not injured, but the vehicle is out of commission as it needs body work, which will be covered by the shop.
Wedgewood added that council would need to start compiling their most recent nominees for the dilapidated properties list for this year.
He also stated that some installation of light poles had began but had to be stopped due to needed parts and the weather.
In other action, council members:
— Approved a vacation of Alley E in between Indiana Avenue and Church Alley as it hasn’t been used by the public for a while.
— Hired Clay Dotson to do yard maintenance in city park at $16 per hour for an amount not expected to exceed 20 hours weekly.
— Received $226,438.48 into the General Fund and paid $158,341.14 for bills from the General Fund.
— Also received $4,222, mostly for gym rentals, and payment of bills totaling $843.46 in bills for the Building Fund.
