NEGLEY –Fire hydrants in the vicinity of Beaver Local K-12 campus are getting a workout a few days into the New Year.

After Friday’s early morning fire on Birch Road, a blaze claimed a residential structure in the 9100 block of state Route 7 later that evening.

According to Negley fire chief James Buckius, the century home, which was part of a large horse farm, was fully engulfed upon arrival , after being called into dispatch at 7:45 p.m. Friday.

Not visible from state Route 7, which ultimately was closed for the blaze’s duration to handle the fire traffic, the Ohio Department of Transportation directed efforts toward spreading salt to improve road conditions for tankers.

In addition to Negley, also assisting on scene were both fire departments from St. Clair Township as well as New Waterford, East Palestine, West Point and Lisbon, which provided manpower and tankers.

Buckius explained, ” When an engine arrived on scene, they dropped a line, so tankers could shoot us water up the hill” as the structure was far off state Route 7.

Ultimately the home was a total loss despite firefighters’ best efforts.

The resident was not at home at the time of the fire and later declined American Red Cross services.

Buckius reported no injuries

As of press time, the blaze was still under investigation, and it was unknown whether the property owner had insurance.
