Council holds special meeting to pass legislation

East Liverpool City Council met in a special session Tuesday to vote on two pieces of legislation, which were passed by emergency measure.

The first ordinance authorizes the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to advertise for bids and enter into a contract with the lowest bidder(s) for the purchase of certain meters, chemicals and supplies for the city’s water and wastewater departments for 2026.

Approved items to purchase under the ordinance are PAC, aluminum chloralhydrate, activated carbon, sodium silicofluoride, potassium permanganate, liquid aluminum sulphate, caustic soda, sodium hypochlorite, orthophosphate, water meter in various sizes from 0 to 4 inches with and without connections and zinc orthophosphate.

The second ordinance allows the city to enter into an agreement with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) for the clearing of trees and brush around the bridges along U.S. Route 30 near the Jennings Randolph Interchange.

According to Mayor Bobby Smith, the ordinance is for ODOT to clear excess trees and brush that are blocking the view of the Ohio River. The project is being done by ODOT at no cost to the city and is considered a state highway improvement project.

Both ordinances were adopted by emergency measures with an all-in-favor vote.

A meeting of the East Liverpool City Council’s Finance and Labor Committee will be held on Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. The next regular meeting of the East Liverpool City Council will be Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. Both meetings will be held in council chambers at East Liverpool City Hall.
