Trustees accept officer’s resignation

With an all-in-favor vote, the St. Clair Township Board of Trustees accepted the resignation of school resource officer Anthony Savina effective Nov. 10.

Savina, who worked part-time as a police officer for St. Clair Township Police Department, was hired on with the department as a full-time officer in September 2021.

Savina served as the school resource officer for Beaver Local Schools.

Police Chief Brian McKenzie was not in attendance at the meeting and forwarded the resignation to the trustees for approval. It was noted that Savina’s reason for leaving was to answer a different calling.

Trustee Jordan Williams said that Savina was a great officer.

McKenzie is currently searching for an officer to fill the vacancy created by Savina’s resignation.

Trustee James Sabatini, who was in attendance at a recent meeting for the Columbiana County land bank, said it looks promising that the land bank will be able to demolish an old trailer sitting on township property near Second Street. He noted that the trailer was uninhabitable, and the former tenant/owner signed the trailer over to the township, so they are able to get rid of it.

Following a public hearing held at the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department on Nov. 3 for the purpose of satisfying the requirements of the Internal Revenue Code, the department submitted a form to the trustees for approval of the department to enter into a contract for an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $488,102 to finance the new engine. The approval which was granted does not constitute any financial involvement or obligation of the township. The approval was signed by Williams.

Trustees also gave their approval to Denoon Lumber for their special hauling application for the timber harvest project on 0.6 miles on Annesley Road to state Route 267. The trustees noted that Denoon Lumber has made this request before, and they have not had any issues with them. Road Supervisor Scott Barrett will take a motion picture of the road before they use it for hauling and again when they are done to document the condition of the road before and after. The approval requires Denoon Lumber to obtain a bond in the amount of $10,010.88 to cover repairs if the hauling results in any damage to the roadway.

Fiscal Officer Deborah Dawson said she complete September’s bank reconciliation and she wanted to thank to the road department for the placement of flags at the park for Veterans Day and putting up the new American Flag.

Purchase orders totaling $5,798.91; blanket certificates totaling $200 and bills totaling $59,901.22 were approved for payment.

Township offices will be closed Nov. 11 for Veterans Day.

The St. Clair Township Police Department will hold its fill-a-cruiser event at Giant Eagle on Nov. 16.

The St. Clair Township trustees meet every other Monday at 4 p.m. at the township government building, 15442 Pugh Road, Calcutta. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17.
