ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP — A brush fire burned through approximately 2 1/2 acres of a 3-acre cornfield on Civatella Drive Monday afternoon.

Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department received the call out for the fire at approximately 2:28 p.m. and responded with Calcutta Brush 32 unit.

First Lt. Andrew Stephens said the call came in as a brush fire in a field with no structures around it. The first unit on the scene sized it up and said it was approximately 2 acres that was burning, and it was spreading rapidly and the department had stations seven and eight from Liverpool Township respond with departments in Negley and West Point on standby. Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department was also on scene.

Stephens said they were initially going to have Negley and West Point respond to the scene, but they were able to get the fire knocked down in about 10 minutes.

Second Lt. Randy Schneider said that due to high winds, the spreading fire was heading toward the wood line and houses at Frederick Heights.

With a quick knockdown we were able to stop the fire from spreading to the homes and contained the fire from spreading, saving the neighborhood,” Schneider said.

McCoy said the fire was stopped approximately 56 to 60 yards from the homes, and the wind was pushing the fire towards the road.

Stephens said, luckily there was a hydrant near the fire, so they were able to run a line instead of having water tanked in.

Fire Chief Dave McCoy said since the corn was harvested there was no crop damage, and the only thing burnt was a picked cornfield. The fire never made it to burn any woods, or homes.

The cause of the fire was a resident on an adjacent property burning pallets, and the fire got out of control and spread to the cornfield.

There were no citations issued for the fire.

According to McCoy, the rules of not burning during a burn ban and why were explained to the resident. He noted the fire was accidental as the wind picked a spark up and carried it into the cornfield and the department has had no previous incidents with the resident regarding burning

McCoy also noted that he again wants to remind residents there is a state burn ban in effect throughout the end of November.
