GAME NIGHT

Melissa Hernandez, of Newell, and her 4-year-old son Braden build a Halloween house at preschool STEM station during Tuesday’s Allison Elementary School family game night, while the older children enjoyed board games. The activity required the pair to build a haunted house out of math manipulative blocks with two main requirements: a ghost had to fit inside the house and stand. According to building principal Toni Hartung the event stems from a survey that wanted more programming parents could utilize to improve their child’s success. School officials suggested parents should read for up to 20 minutes each night, limit screen time, practice daily math exercises and talk about their child’s day to encourage appropriate vocabulary development. Families also played a variety of board games like Scrabble, Monopoly, Yahtzee and memory games to develop their vocabulary and math skills as well as signed a gym wall to benefit the principal’s special projects fund and also received information from the Chester Lions Club about their vision program and the Hancock County Family Support Center about their different initiatives.
