Deadline to register to vote in Nov. 4 election is Monday
LISBON — The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election is Monday, with absentee voting by mail and early in-person voting kicking off Tuesday.
Columbiana County Board of Elections Director Kim Fusco announced the dates during the election board meeting late Monday afternoon, when board members approved the voting machine allocation and ballot allocation for the upcoming election.
The county Board of Elections at 7989 Dickey Drive, Lisbon will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to accommodate anyone needing to register to vote. Fusco also said early voting staffing will increase payroll hours by 190 for the clerks and for extra personnel brought in just for the early voting to help out.
The schedule for early in-person voting is the following:
— 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Oct. 10, Tuesday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Oct. 17 and Monday, Oct. 20 through Friday, Oct. 24.
— 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 and Wednesday, Oct. 29 through Friday, Oct. 31.
— 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28.
— 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
— 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2.
Voting requires either an Ohio driver’s license, an Ohio state ID, a passport or a military ID. If a name has changed due to marriage or divorce, a copy of the marriage license or divorce document can be shown to vote a regular ballot. Without the documentation, the ballot will be considered provisional and documentation will be required later at the board office.
The board approved a change in the polling location for voters in the Knox Township Northwest Precinct due to a complaint about accessibility.
According to Fusco, she received an email from the Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator for the Secretary of State’s Office in Columbus regarding the complaint about the Mile Branch Grange location on Knox School Road, noting the building has a lift, but someone in a wheelchair would not be able to access it.
The new polling location for that precinct will be the West Branch Booster Club building on U.S. Route 62, which is already a polling location for another voting precinct in Knox Township. Fusco said it’s ADA compliant, but they conducted an accessibility test just to make sure.
Voters in the Knox Township Northwest Precinct will be notified by mail about the polling location change.
In other business, board Chairman David Johnson asked what the turnout might be, but Fusco said she couldn’t venture a guess right now, noting there will be more voters in the township likely due to trustee races.
“Maybe 25 percent?” she said.
She’ll likely have a better idea once the in-office voting gets going.
This time around, she said the electronic pollbooks will be used again. During the last election, there was an issue in another county and the Secretary of State’s Office had some counties, including Columbiana County, go back to paper pollbooks for the May election.
She reported received a $10,000 Help America Vote Act grant, which was used to make the pollbooks more secure. The pollbooks aren’t connected to the Internet in any way and are used for voter signatures. Also received was $4,300 from the Secretary of State’s Office related to voter registrations and the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Fusco also updated board members on the $135,223 received in the spring from the Secretary of State’s Office, noting that after subtracting the chargebacks from the spring election for the state issues, that left $86,691 that has to be returned to the state. She said it’s affecting a lot of the boards across the state. She said they may try to pay back that money in two or three payments, if permitted.
