Massillon fugitive arrested in Chester following chase

CHESTER — Area police arrested a wanted Massillon man who had crossed into West Virginia during a police chase Sunday night.

According to Chester Police Chief Chuck Stanley, a Columbiana County sheriff’s deputy had identified a vehicle Sunday night while routinely patrolling on state Route 39 in East Liverpool from an active BOLO issued earlier by Massillon police.

The deputy and an East Liverpool police unit attempted to execute a felony traffic stop on the reportedly stolen vehicle driven by Van Keith Jones II, who had been sought on numerous felony charges of robbery, intimidation of a witness, strangulation, violation of a protection order, theft and domestic violence from an earlier incident.

Jones, 41, also had made homicidal and suicidal threats as well as was believed to be armed, the press release issued by Chester police stated.

Instead of stopping, Jones continued to flee, entering the state of West Virginia on U.S. Route 30, and finally was stopped beyond the Chester exit.

St. Clair Township police had dispatched a K-9 unit, and both Chester police and a Hancock County deputy also had joined the effort.

In addition to the initial Ohio charges, Jones now has been charged with bringing stolen property into the state, fleeing from police and driving while license suspended in West Virginia. He was taken into custody without incident and awaits arraignment in Hancock County Magistrate’s Court.

He currently is at the Northern Regional Jail.

Massillon is located in Stark County approximately 70 miles away.

Starting at $2.99/week.
