Officials: A/C is available at OGHS

NEW CUMBERLAND — Responding to concerns they said were being expressed online, officials with Hancock County Schools want to assure residents there is air conditioning available at Oak Glen High School.

Kasey Arnott, director of facilities and maintenance, raised the issue during Monday’s meeting of the Hancock County Board of Education, disputing claims he said were being made via social media that the school had no air conditioning as the school year began last week.

“We do have air conditioning there,” Arnott said, noting the systems are running at approximately 75% of their maximum power as a result of two compressors going bad.

Arnott said the compressor units broke down earlier this month, explaining he already had been working on pricing replacements. He said one unit could be available in approximately two weeks, but another wouldn’t be available until October if they were to be purchased.

“The price to replace that is pretty significant,” he said.

It was noted there are plans to install new chiller units as part of planned HVAC upgrades to the majority of the school system’s buildings, with funding provided through the countywide bond levy approved by voters last year.

Board member Randy Swartzmiller pointed to cooler temperatures expected in the coming weeks, saying he feels any issues will be short-term, while board Vice President Ed Fields said he recently attended a volleyball event at the school and felt comfortable throughout.

Superintendent Dan Enich said school officials wanted to clarify the issue for the public.

“You can’t stop what goes out on social media, especially when it’s wrong,” Enich said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
